Visa has just unwittingly started us toward the mobile wallet

If I'm reading this new partnership between Visa and Chase correctly, Visa will allow Chase "to directly negotiate card-acceptance pricing and operating rules with merchants". This will mean that larger merchants will start seeing different rates or different terms on Visa transactions. This means that we will start seeing more deals oriented around Visa in those merchants.

MasterCard has to follow suit.

So, now we'll start seeing the use of different cards will reward customers in different ways: in addition to current point or cash-back schemes, there will be at-counter discounts and increased loyalty benefits. And keeping track of which card to use will be difficult.

So, how does the average person manage? They store their card data and use a device that they keep with them that will automatically choose the card that optimizes all of the various rewards/promotions/discounts.

Mobile wallet has long since suffered from the fact that it isn't any easier than the current model. This could change that.
